The Zen Peacemaker Order, a project operated by Zen Peacemakers Inc., is the international community of spiritual practitioners who follow the Zen Peacemakers’ teachings of the The Three Treasures, The Three Tenets, The Ten Practices and The Four Commitments. They underlie our commitment to broad-based inclusivity, service, multi-faith celebrations and communion, and to a lifelong peacemaking path that integrates work, training and practice.
ZPO has expanded its social justice work throughout the world, weaving an international confederation of Socially Engaged Buddhist Sanghas and regular Bearing Witness Retreats (BWRs). ZPO is committed to embodying the practice of the Three Tenets (Not Knowing, Bearing Witness and Compassionate Action) as well as the practice of Council in all of its work in the world.
In the mid-90s, as the Abbot of Zen Center of LA, Bernie Glassman (along with his wife and co-founder of ZPO, Jishu Holmes) was first introduced to Council by Gigi Coyle and Jack Zimmerman, as well as Joan Halifax. Since that time, Council has been integrated as a daily activity at all of ZPO retreats and into its affiliated sanghas; council trainings are now a regular feature of the planning for international BWRs.
