Center for Council is excited to announce the release of Where Compassion Begins: Foundational Practices to Enhance Mindfulness, Attention and Listening from the Heart, by Executive Director Jared Seide. This book was made possible through resources provided by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) in a reallocation of grant funding originally intended for in-prison programming that became unusable during the pandemic.

Where Compassion Begins grew out of material first developed for our prison council programs, integrating strands that have emerged from our community of practitioners over many years. It weaves scientific research, mindfulness practices, and self-directed activities with council-based prompts and suggestions. In the words of Jack Zimmerman, “Where Compassion Begins is an imaginative bridge from the traditional roots of council and meditation to this moment in evolution, with contemporary references to science, medicine and recent understanding of the human condition.”

The book is a celebration of the power of listening from the heart. It is intended to support anyone curious about deepening their practice, training their attention, coming together in council. It encourages us to connect with our hearts, our shared humanity, the world around us, and to find ways to foster healing and connection. It is offered as a resource for incarcerated populations, law enforcement officers, social justice organizations, hospitals, schools and the population at-large. Renowned Peacebuilder John Paul Lederach describes the book as: “Mindfulness in practice, offering hope across our differences and deep divides, a pathway that could not be more needed or opportune at this point in our communities and nation. This book is truly a gift for our times.”
