Leaving Prison Behind: A Council Before I Go

Leaving Prison Behind: A Council Before I Go is an illustrated novella that weaves the words and stories of system-impacted folks into a powerful resource for those who are undertaking the perilous journey home. It is an outgrowth of Center for Council’s Council Reentry Program and tells the story of one man’s last night of incarceration, as he calls a solo council to bear witness to all of his inspirations, loved ones, allies and teachers. The text was written by, and for, those who are undertaking the journey to freedom, many of whom practice council at one of 29 prisons where Center for Council has initiated programs, as well as those who support that journey. Through the tale of one man’s last night of incarceration, the book presents a rich roundup of stories, anecdotes, musings and resources intended to support those who are stepping into a critical time of transition. Leaving Prison Behind offers a compelling glimpse of a profoundly moving council that could’ve been, or one that may be yet to come… a council where words, images, stories and revelations are offered to resource, nourish and celebrate an extraordinary threshold moment.
